The planning process for the Anchorage Metropolitan Area Recreational Trails Plan is underway, and this is the time to give your input!
The Trails Plan will create a guide to managing, maintaining, and building great trails in Anchorage and Chugiak-Eagle River. This is the time to share YOUR ideas and discuss opportunities to improve trails over the next 10+ years. More information about the trails plan process is available here: https://www.publicinput.com/rectrails
Take Action: There are 2 important ways to provide input at this point
1. You Can Take the Recreation Trails Plan Survey
-
- STA and CMBR have compiled a list of priority projects that can be referenced while taking the survey (see below).
- The survey takes about 10 minutes and responses are anonymous.
- Link to the survey: https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/3f4e86444ba94f8a98d088e8b2cba1ae
2. You can attend one or both workshops in Chugiak-Eagle River and Anchorage
The workshops are hosted by Anchorage Metropolitan Area Transportation Solutions (AMATS) and the Municipality of Anchorage Parks and Recreation to give input on the future of our trails including trail locations, types of trails, etc.
-
- Workshop #1: Wednesday, November 20 at 6:30pm at the Beach Lake Chalet (17300 S Birchwood Loop Rd, Chugiak)
-
- Workshop #2: Thursday, November 21 at 5:30pm at the Spenard Recreation Center (2020 W 48th Ave, Anchorage)
STA Trail Priorities to include in the Recreational Trails Plan
-
- Develop a bike park near an existing trail system (such as Kincaid Park) for skill development (similar to Ben’s Bike Playground at Mirror Lake)
- Develop a multi-use trail system within Section 36 on the Anchorage hillside
- Build mountain bike/multi-use trails in the southwest section of Kincaid park (near the Lekisch loop)
CMBR Trail Priorities to include in the Recreational Trails Plan
-
- Build an additional 5-6 miles of aMTB (adaptive mountain bike) trails on the Inlet side of Mirror Lake Park connecting to Mirror Lake Middle School
- Develop MTB trails near both Chugiak High School (Beach Lake Park) and Eagle River High School (connecting to MTB trails planned near the Eagle River Campground in Chugach State Park)
- Build the Northern Extension Coastal Trail from Beach Lake Park to Mirror Lake Park.
- Extend the Eagle River Road paved pathway to Eagle River Nature Center.
- Complete missing sections of the Glenn Hwy paved pathway from Hiland to Eklutna.
AREAWIDE Trail Priorities to include in the Recreational Trails Plan
-
- Provide connections from municipal land to Chugach State Park (CSP) to facilitate potential future trail development in the CSP.
- Include mountain bike-optimized trails where bikes have the right-of-way.
- Include winter-only snow bike trails in trail planning.
- Task Anchorage and Chugiak-Eagle River Parks and Recreation departments to coordinate, advocate, and implement the Recreational Trails Plan across agencies and landowners, including planning review at the state and local levels.
