SUMMARY:Backcountry Bike Spicy Sunday Road Ride
DESCRIPTION:Coming up\, the Backcountry Bike Spicy Sunday on Aug. 9.With the way the calendar falls this month\, the Friday Casual Road Ride will be the same weekends as the Spicy Sunday.Spin your legs out on Friday\, do some primers on Saturday\, and see if you can hang on on Sunday! \nFor the third edition\, I have good news!It will be both slightly shorter\, and slower than previous rides! Of course\, that’s because we’ll be climbing Hatcher’s Pass\, but…those are just details. This Spicy Sunday ride will start at the Backcountry Bike & Ski shop in Palmer at 8AM; note the much earlier start to get going before traffic starts to pick up on Fishhook rd.Blame the <a href="http://tourists. \nWe” target=”_blank” title=”tourists. \nWe”>tourists. \nWe will take the Bogard/Trunk/Fishhook route to the Pass before heading up to Independence Mine Museum. Once we (carefully!) come back down\, we’ll follow a similar route back\, with a detour down Snowgoose and Scott Rd because why not?Goal is to be descending and mostly out of the pass by 10am as traffic picks up noticeably at that <a href="http://point. \nThe” target=”_blank” title=”point. \nThe”>point. \nThe Spicy Sunday ride is for experienced road riders; we assume an average pace of 16+mph\, and the course may have one or two hills\, as well as spending a significant amount of time on the road with traffic. It is a “yes-drop” ride\, so make sure you have emergency contacts\, and the route home if you do get left behind..I strongly suggest brightly coloured cycling wear and daytime running lights. And a helmet…It should take about 3hrs ride time. The weather looks like…August\, so plan for light <a href="http://rain. \nWhen/where;” target=”_blank” title=”rain. \nWhen/where;”>rain. \nWhen/where; 8AM start time\, Backcountry Bike & Ski\, PalmerRoute: Bogard/Trunk/Fishhook.Roughly 43mi\, 3500’ elevation.Should be done by 11am<a href="https://www.strava.com/routes/3519138660987807554Pace;” target=”_blank” title=”https://www.strava.com/routes/3519138660987807554Pace;”>https://www.strava.com/routes/3519138660987807554Pace; 16mph and up! Last two have averaged around 18mph. Safety; This route is almost entirely on road\, and portions have no shoulder.Ride single file as needed\, be visible\, and let traffic pass when it’s safe. The descent down Hatchers has some rough sections; watch out for them on your way up\, and ride within your ability…it ain’t a race <a href="http://downhill.Waivers;” target=”_blank” title=”downhill.Waivers;”>downhill.Waivers; are a thing.Road cycling is inherently a somewhat risky sport\, and your participation is <a href="http://voluntary.Strava” target=”_blank” title=”voluntary.Strava”>voluntary.Strava event RSVP: <a href="https://strava.app.link/hAqmmme3h5b \nStrava” target=”_blank” title=”https://strava.app.link/hAqmmme3h5b \nStrava”>https://strava.app.link/hAqmmme3h5b \nStrava Group link: <a href="https://strava.app.link/dqOvS3p3h5b \n” target=”_blank” title=”https://strava.app.link/dqOvS3p3h5b \n“>https://strava.app.link/dqOvS3p3h5b

SUMMARY:Backcountry Bike Friday Road Ride\, 8-7
DESCRIPTION:That’s right folks! Back to back weeks of the Casual Friday Road bike ride! The next gathering is Friday August 7<a href="http://th. \nThe” target=”_blank” title=”th. \nThe”>th. \nThe Casual Road Friday ride is for novice and intermediate riders venturing out on their drop bar bikes and learning about riding on the road\, and maybe some tips for how to ride (there is more to it than you think!)\, and ideas for places to go. \nIt took me a few false starts to find a route I was happy with\, and keeping it somewhat new\, but I think I managed it–blasted private roads messed with my first two plans. In the end\, we will take the Glenn Bike Path out\, do a loop around a block near Bradley Lake\, then come back through Outer Springer and cut through the neighborhoods in the middle. Given we are going past Palmer Brewing\, a pub stop is definitely an option to be discussed en-route! \nStart: 8-7\, 6:15pm at Backcountry Bike & Ski in PalmerPace: 12-15\, on Road and Gravel <a href="http://bikes.Route:” target=”_blank” title=”bikes.Route:”>bikes.Route: https://strava.app.link/KURF0mnwj5b . 14.3mi\, 400′ elevation. Only a couple slight hills….and a long\, gradual climb back to start. There is a little bit of gravel on the route\, but it gave me no problems on 28mm tires <a href="http://yesterday.Waivers;” target=”_blank” title=”yesterday.Waivers;”>yesterday.Waivers; cycling is an inherently risky hobby. Waivers are at the front checkout <a href="http://counter. \nStrava” target=”_blank” title=”counter. \nStrava”>counter. \nStrava event RSVP: https://strava.app.link/crrhN8Vwj5b

SUMMARY:Ribbon Cutting for Kids Bike Pump Track
DESCRIPTION:New Kids Bicycle Pump Track Opens at Valley of the Moon Park: \nMedia and Public Invited to Join Mayor Suzanne LaFrance\, Rep. Zack Fields at Ribbon Cutting \nWHAT: Ribbon-cutting for new kids bicycle pump trackWHEN: 4 pm Thursday\, July 30\, 2026WHERE: Valley of the Moon Park\, 610 W. 17th Avenue \nMedia and the public are invited to join community leaders and volunteers at a ribbon-cutting for a new kids bicycle pump track at Valley of the Moon park. Attendees are encouraged to bring their bikes and helmets to take a spin on the new trail built by Josh Benham of Pro-Trails. Rep. Zack Fields\, with the support of South Addition and North Star Community Councils\, raised $20\,000 from donors to match a $20\,000 Community Challenge grant from the Anchorage Park Foundation. The Anchorage Parks and Recreation Commission endorsed the project. The pump track will be maintained by volunteers. \n“This is a great day for neighborhoods in the Chester Creek corridor\,” said Rep. Fields. “I appreciate all the individual neighbors who funded this project\, as well as Anchorage Sand and Gravel and Santos\, who made major <a href="http://contributions.” \n“Parks” target=”_blank” title=”contributions.” \n“Parks”>contributions.” \n“Parks and trails build community\,” said Beth Nordlund\, Executive Director for Anchorage Park Foundation. “Join us to celebrate a new attraction to help kids stay active.” \nThis is the first completed Anchorage Park Foundation Community Challenge Grant project– one of 14 projects funded through the program for the 2026-2027 grant cycle. Grantees must raise a 1:1 match of volunteer time and/or donations. Since its inception in 2005\, APF has awarded $2.4 million in funding to 135 community-led projects that have leveraged more than $8.4 million in matching volunteer time or cash to improve parks and trails. This program is supported by Rasmuson Foundation and Anchorage Parks and Recreation Department. \nAnchorage Health Department will be at the event with free bike helmets\, locks\, reflective gear and maps for kids. \n# # # \nThe Anchorage Park Foundation mobilizes public support and financial resources for Anchorage parks\, trails\, and recreation <a href="http://opportunities. \n” target=”_blank” title=”opportunities. \n“>opportunities.
